Raw Mango Chutney | Maangai Chutney

    Published: May 19, 2013 · by Nisha

A very usual combination for idly/dosa is sambhar or chutney or Milagai Podi (Gun Powder). The chutney are usually made with coconut or Onion and tomato. But this Andhra bowl is quite unique and different from the regular chutneys we make. The instant sourness followed by the stinging heat from the chilli is sure to liven up any drab meal as well as your taste beds. Don't you worry, you can always cut down the heat if you are intolerant. But if you can do not skip the chillies. We like them super hot.
This can also be made as thogayal and have it with steaming hot rice. Add roasted channa dal, urad dahl and red chilli (instead of green chilli) while grinding. Since this chutney is sour, have it with uthappam or masala dosa or any other dosa variety or milagai podi idly. This will give a balanced taste.

Raw mango, ChutneyRAW MANGO CHUTNEY | MAANGAI CHUTNEYSour and spicy chutney. A unique taste and a different side for dosa/idly.

Prep time: 10 mins | Cook time: NIL | Total time: 10 Mins | Serves: 2

    Ingredients

    • 1 Cup Grated Raw mango
    • ½ Cup Grated Coconut
    • 2-3 no's Green chillies
    • 2 tsp Oil
    • 1 tsp Mustard seeds
    • 1 no Red Chilli
    • ½ teaspoon Asafoetida
    • 1 tsp Urad Dahl
    Instructions

    1. Grind the grated raw mango, coconut and green chilli together in a mixer into a smooth paste. Add salt and keep it aside.
    2. Heat oil in a pan; add mustard seeds and once they crackle add the red chilli, urad dahl and asafoetida.
    3. Pour the tempering over the chutney. Serve it with Dosa or idly.

    Note

    1. Based on the sourness of the mango, the spice level may vary. If the mangoes you have purchased are very tangy, increase the chillies accordingly. You can also balance the amount of green chilli and red chilli according to your preference. Increase the chilli than you would normally use for cooking. Being a very tangy dish, it will taste good if there is little more spice in it.
