    Ompodi | Plain Sev

    Published: Jul 13, 2015 · by Nisha

For the final day it is, Ompodi - a traditional South Indian snack made during festivals, especially Diwali. Simple and a plain snack to munch on as such or can be used in many of the chaat varieties.

    Besan snack made during festivities.

    Prep Time: 10 Mins | Cook Time: 15 Mins | Total Time: 25 Mins | Serves: 3-4

    Ingredients

    • 2 Cups Besan | Kadala Mavu
    • ½ Cup Rice flour | Arisi mavu
    • Salt to taste
    • 2 teaspoon Red chilli powder
    • ½ teaspoon Black pepper powder
    • 1 teaspoon Ajwain | Omam
    Instructions

    1. Soak ajwain in warm water for about 10 minutes. Strain the ajwain and keep the waster aside.
    2. Mix the flour, salt, chilli powder. Add the ajwain water and if needed add some more water and knead into a dough. Stiff and sticky dough.
    3. Heat oil in a pan for deep frying. Once very hot, take some and put it in the muruku press.
    4. Press the muruku maker in the oil and the dough will come out to form round discs.
    5. Turn it once and cook until the sizzling sound reduces.
    6. Drain it in a paper towel. Then transfer it, as such or break them into fine pieces, to an air tight box.
